The Friends’ Charity Shop first opened its doors in July 2006, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.  Start-up funds had been raised at a Bar Cheers Open Night in May, and premises were made available in El Centro in the Las Fuentes area of Alcossebre at a peppercorn rent through Grupo Albert.  These early days relied on volunteers running the shop, and generous donations of unwanted clothes, bric-a-brac and books.  There is now also a large ‘behind-the-scenes’ team who sort and iron the clothes before they are put on sale in the shop, run the shop rota, collect items which people have problems with bringing to the shop, and all the other tasks involved in its organisation.  More volunteers are always welcomed!

In 2009 the shop continues to extend its good work – raising funds “Supporting our Community”.  It is now open on Monday to Friday mornings, boasting a remarkable stock of second-hand clothes and over 1,500 books (the majority in English) at just 1€ each and a host of ‘bric-a-brac’ items, and whereas the ‘charity shop’ concept is not common in Spain, there are now both British and Spanish ladies (and men!) running the shop in Alcossebre.

Since the first donations were allocated in October 2006, over 42,000 euros have been shared between a wide range of bodies in Alcossebre and Alcala de Xivert including: the AECC; the Alcala Banda de Musica; the Red Cross; the Roman Catholic Church; the Junior Schools; the Guarderías; the Alcossebre Anglican Church; the Junior Football Clubs; the Junior Schools; the Pensioners’ Associations; the Alcossebre Singers; the Andalus Dancers; and one-off donations to: CLICK Child Leukaemia support group (UK); El Cau Dogs’ Refuge, Vinaros and The Parkinson’s Association, Castellón.

A big step in the Friends’ development was taken with the decision in 2008 to obtain registered association status to give the activities a legal basis in Spain.  The first AGM under the new Constitution was held in June 2009, with the name The Friends of Alcossebre.

The Charity Shop is the main source of income for the Friends of Alcossebre, but a series of regular, well supported fund-raising events are organised every year – dinner-dances, charity walks, etc. – with the next event being the San Martín de Porres Gala Dinner & Dance at the Restaurante 21, Las Fuentes, on Friday, 6th November 2009 – Tickets 35 euros, available from Bar Restaurante Cheers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12th October 2009.
