there are no drunks in valencia

Apparently there is a new phenomenon in the Costa Blanca, only people who live by the sea seem to have a problem with alcohol, at least that is what I found when I moved inland three years ago, and desperately needed help to try and stop my drinking. Like many, the early days here were tough for me, and my drinking only increased with the seemingly endless days of wine by the pool, drinks with all meals (including breakfast), and the constant round of being invited by all my new (and lovely) friends for a drink, which was never a cup of tea! This coupled with prices which made alcoholism a far cheaper option than it ever was in the UK, eventually led me to seek the help of AA.
But where were they? I eventually found a small list of numbers hidden in the classified section of an English paper and rang a number. A lovely person listened to my story and asked me if I would like to come along to a meeting, where did I live, could I meet up for a chat? When I told them I lived near Alzira their first reaction was to laugh (admittedly not what you really want to hear when you are desperate), and say what was I doing living way out there! It transpired the nearest meeting was in fact Denia, but I made it along to the meeting and continued to go to both this one and the one in Teulada. Although it is a long way to go I can honestly say that these meetings saved my sanity and probably my life. The people I met there and the support and help I received and continue to receive have changed my life, to the point where I can honestly say I am happier now, with me, than I have ever been.
Unfortunately, we still don't  seem to have any people living further North than Oliva (apart from me), attending our meetings and I am sure that this is because people are unaware of the existence of English meetings in the Costa Blanca, if we find a need then of course we can start a meeting.
At the moment however the Inland Trader has kindly offered to publish a list of the meetings currently available, for although we are anonymous and of course confidentiality is of the utmost importance, it is essential that those who may need us know where we can be found. We would also love to hear from people who were already members in the UK but have never managed to find us on the Costa Blanca.
The AA is a completely free and confidential service. The primary purpose of its members is to stay sober and to help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. If you are happy with your drinking great, the last thing we want to do is to stop people enjoying themselves. But is you aren't happy, or are worried that alcohol is ruining your life, then perhaps there is something we can do about it.
