The number of counterfeit euro coins increased by 17%

The two euro denomination was the most affected by this criminal activity with a total of 121,000 units recalled.The number of counterfeit euro coins removed from circulation in 2012 increased by 17% over the previous year, from 157,000 in 2011 to 184,000 units last year, according to the European Commission.

Among the various counterfeit coins detected, the two-euro denomination was the most affected by this criminal activity with a total of 121,000 units recalled, ahead of the 32,000 counterfeit coins of one euro and fifty cents 31,000. In regard to counterfeit euro notes, the Commission reported that about 531,000 were withdrawn counterfeit bills in 2012, according to figures from the European Central Bank, the institution responsible for protecting against counterfeiting banknotes.
