Winter beds crisis hits hospitals early
According to nursing union, SATSE, paediatric wards in Valencia have been overwhelmed with cases of "infant respiratory illnesses as a result of the drop in temperatures". La Fe Hospital could not provide beds for five children waiting to be admitted, attempts were made ´to transfer these children to wards at the Children's Clinic and the General Hospital, but neither of these hospitals had vacant beds." Between Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November 439 children were treated "The sharp increase in respiratory cases occurred after the cold wave hit across Valencia this weekend. The impact particularly affected babies and children between six months and two years," said SATSE. La Fe admitted 28 babies, the majority of which were suffering with breathing difficulties. SATSE have warned, even though we have not yet seen epidemic levels of illness the hospitals are already full to capacity. There are concerns that in the coming weeks the hospitals could reach breaking point as the number of cases increases. Paediatrician Carlos Paredes said “we usually see increasing respiratory virus infections from the beginning of November." Doctors recommend keeping your children wrapped up, avoid cold damp conditions and smoky environments.
