U3A Oliva

In September the U3A (University of the Third Age) Oliva celebrates its first Anniversary, and there is much to celebrate. In just one year the organisation has attracted 300 members, who enjoy a wide range of educational, social and physical activities in more than 25 groups.

In addition to the group activities, we have had trips to Valencia, Javea U3A May Ball and to Elche. Plus a wonderful San Juan celebration on the beach, regular quiz nights, ten pin bowling and a Christmas dinner. We have been entertained by interesting speakers at our monthly meetings, and particularly enjoyed hearing the Calpe U3A choir.

The support we have received from Oliva Town Council has been a major factor in the success of the association. They have provided first class premises at no cost, and helped us in many ways.

Looking ahead, our regular programme of group activities resumes in September, and we have our first AGM and election of officers on September 25th. New committee members are welcome. The work is not onerous and it is very rewarding.

The Christmas dinner and dance is at Viva España this year and will be bigger and better than ever. Tickets will be on sale at the meeting on September 25th and members can register online.

Our website (www.u3a-oliva.org) is the hub of the association, all the news and information is freely available and constantly updated. Communication with members is via email and the website and there are computer classes for members who need assistance in this area. Our recent competition for a logo produced some interesting designs: the winning entry is now on the website and is very appropriate, showing hands reaching out in friendship.

A new feature this September is the introduction of online payments for membership applications and renewals, and for events. There is also a ‘members only’ section where registered members can look up other members, use the members’ blog, buy and sell on our own version of Ebay and contact our Almoner, who provides help and support for members in emergencies.

A new group starting in September is the ‘Solos’. This is in response to comments from members without partners that they would like to have a group of their own for mutual support and shared activities.  The inaugural meeting will be a paella party on September 13th and there is a lot of interest already.

We look forward to welcoming back all our existing and many new members in our second year. Please visit the website for further information or telephone the Secretary on 96 285 1877.
