Muro de Alcoy- the town

Muro de Alcoy is situated between Alicante and Valencia in the so-called gateway to the Costa Blanca. It is in an area of natural beauty lying at the bottom of the slopes of the Mariola mountain range offering much in the way of scenery for nature lovers, the tourist and property buyers.  It is a small town with approximately 7500 inhabitants. It is near to the major town of Alcoy, which offers a typical city experience with shops and a variety of entertainment for those who wish to escape the relative tranquility of Spanish existence. The first thing about Muro that strikes the visitor is how unlike many other Spanish towns in the area it is.  The streets have an open quality uncluttered by buildings built too close together with the layout of the town akin to those of us familiar with English towns. For the expat it has a familiar feeling to it and is a place where more and more British are wishing to buy a property (there are a number of estate agents and property services catering for the British and German markets.) Inland Property Specialists and La Baronia are two local estate agents who deal with property services in this town.  Recently "The English Shop" was opened in its main street, which has an English book service a well as providing all those things to eat from good old Blighty and which you cannot get in this area without a journey to the coast. English magazines are also available in the local Spanish newsagents and there are plenty of supermarkets, greengrocers etc for daily living. There is also a language centre for those who want to learn Spanish remember the more of you that there are, the cheaper it is. Or on the hand if you want to earn a few pennies you can always offer your services as an English teacher. If you need that all important haircut, but don’t know how to ask for a rinse and set in  Spanish, Dani, an English mobile hairdresser covers the Muro de Alcoi area. For all you car owners you are well provided for by 4x4 Mania, which specializes in 4x4 repairs and offer a great service at realistic prices for all makes and models. It also has its own group which meets up for a drive on Sundays for an excursion in the region where you can bring your own 4x4 and picnic. In nearby Cocentaina there is also the Car Clinic which will provide a good service in English on anything to do with your motor. Also in the Muro area is a microlite and model airplane flying club, which makes visitors very welcome.

As I mentioned earlier Alcoy is a short drive away on the N340 and here is the Alcoy-Gandia railway line. From here you can also travel by train to Valencia calling at Ontinyent, Albaida and Xativa. The local bus service is good and there are two main services that run regularly including weekends. The Linia M45 service goes to Alcoi and the Travicoi bus route provides regular daily transport between Ibi and Valencia calling at Muro en route.
